Summer Maintenance

Summer is a great time to be out and about in the Southern Highlands and now is the best time to get your garden looking its best for the all the hot weather, BBQ’s and relaxing in your wonderfull Highlands Garden.

We have some helpful tips to keep your gardens and lawns looking their best all year round but particularly during summer.

Here are our top 3 lawn tips

Mow Regularly: regular mowing will encourage a healthy lawn and reduce the amount of weeds and other nasty funguses and moulds that are common during the warmer humid months of the year. We recommend weekly mowing, but fortnightly is ok if and the maximum we would recomend. Any longer and you will culling off and those important good bits that help make your lawn look great.

Mow High: we recommend a cut between 50 – 60mm in grass height. This gives your lawn the best chance for healthy growth by leaving the leaf en-tacked and able to collect those much needed rays of sun (your not the only one looking for a tan). Your grass will respond quicker and more vibrantly. Scalping your lawn stresses the plant and will dramatically effect its summer growth and look but will also make winter harder and your spring response will be slower.

Its not all about the lawn, your Southern Highlands garden is part of what makes this area great and it what we are known for so here is out top 3 for keeping your garden at its best.

Pruning, Pruning & More Pruning: hedges are in full flight as are your other trees and shrubs. Give them a light trim to keep them tidy and under control. Your major pruning can wait till a bit later in the year when things have slowed down. the trick now is to keep the trimmers handy and just take off what’s not looking great. Dead wood and shoot growth is what we are looking for but less is more. the more leaf we leave of now the more energy your plants are storing to get them through winter. More light prunes often is better than one big one at this time of year.
